In 1877, Manet had painted the Portrait en Costume d’Hamlet of singer J. B. Faure, who had been one of the first to understand and collect his works. The portrait ordered by Faure was never finished. Manet started again on several canvases (Wildenstein N° 389, 390) he had to be abandon.
